Halloween Trick
I really like to pass out candy on Halloween and count the kids. Tonight we had 57. That is a normal number in the last few years. But in the 90’s it was normal to have 175-200. I miss a lot of kids…..a steady stream of kids at the door. I love the costumes. This year there were quite a few characters from the Harry Potter series. My favorite was a little clown about 2 years old. I could not get my camera to work. But I did get a picture of this 50’s teenager with the pink poodle skirt. She must be ‘going steady’ since she has the letter jacket on. Her brother was all in white. I am not sure who he was.
Mona went wacko the first few door bell rings. Then she relaxed some and took advantage and sniffed all the kids as they reached for the candy. There were two doggie costumes…..one a mutt and the other a dalmation. No bully behavior from Mona for the dogs
How do you like my favorite Halloween trick? I remove the screen and the storm window so I can give out the candy without opening the door. Mona hangs out the window (to get the best sniffs) so I put towels on the window ledge. We had a great night. BTW, those are Dutch klompen hanging by the front door.

Looks like fun! I like you pics! Why were there more kids trick or treating in the 1990’s?

@Sam: some crazy guy in Tennessee(?) poisoned his kid and then put rat poison in a piece of Halloween candy to blame it on. The crazy guy wanted the insurance money. This inspired another wacko to put needles in Halloween candy the next year. So, just two incidences but parents were supposed to inspect the candy before the kids ate any. If the package was torn….dispose of it. Some hospitals would x-ray the bags of candy for free. That was the end of apples/oranges/popcornballs and anything homemade like fudge or carmel apples. Then they started having school or YMCA or church parties on the 31st to keep the kids from trick or treating. Too bad. This was such a wild and crazy holiday. Ring a door bell and demand candy from the adults. We had no rules on this night when we were kids(which was rare). I guess my mom just figured we would come home when the sack got too heavy. Which we did. And that was the only dangerous time….on the way home. You had to be careful of the big kids who would steal your entire sack of candy.

That made me a little nostalgic. I do remember those stories when I was a kid too…pretty silly though…I think the odds are greater of winning the lottery than finding a poisioned MilkDudd.
I do remember the Dentist in our town gave out toothbrushes with his candy. Another house gave out silver dollars! That was a really big deal to a kid back in the 80’s… Good Times!

There was a house about a block from us that gave out comic books. And he KNEW if you tried to come back twice

I think Halloween is a great event for kids and adults both. There is history with it in the US and I hope it doesn´t stop due to a few bad apples… over here… not popular and I am actually happy about that. It just doesn´t fit here. Not a tradition. I saw three kids dressed up that night. Nobody rang our door bell. All is as it should be…. over here that is!
